Present and former President to visit Assam University

SILCHAR, May 2: It is going to be the first of its kind that Assam University will be graced by the presence of both the present and the former President of India on two different occasions in the same month.

President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, will address the 13th Convocation of Assam University slated for May 14 and to be held at the Netaji Manch in the campus. The former President of India and one of the renowned scientists, APJ Abdul Kalam, who will address the Convocation of National Institute Technology, Silchar on May 12, will visit the varsity on May 11 and will participate in an interactive session with the teachers and the students.

It is pertinent to mention here that APJ Abdul Kalam during his term as President visited the varsity in 2006 and participated in an interaction programme with the students only. It was the first visit of a President of the country to Assam University since its inception.

However, it is for the first time that the President of India will address the Convocation and this has evoked keen interest among the teaching fraternity and student community of the University. Pranab Mukherjee will be visiting Northeast for the first time after becoming the President of India.

The sources added that APJ Abdul Kalam will stay in Silchar on May 11 and will address the Convocation on May 12 at NIT. The renowned computer scientist Dr Bhaskar will join him in the convocation.
